Rhodes

Lindos – panoramic view of St. Paul bay with acropolis of Lindos in background (Rhodes, Greece)

On the Greek island of Rhodes, November arrives with an air of gentle mildness.

The island, renowned for its rich history and endless sunshine, takes on a quieter but no less appealing charm during this time.

The medieval Old Town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, greets visitors with its stone-paved alleys and imposing fortifications.

You can explore the Palace of the Grand Master and the Street of the Knights with virtually no other people!

When the summer crowds dissipate, the island’s beaches become peaceful stretches of sand and pebbles.

Kalithea Springs, located on the island’s eastern coast, is particularly striking in November’s softer light.

The histoirc city of Kamiros, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes, stand against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea, and in November, you can explore the site at your own pace!

As the day draws to a close, Rhodes’ traditional tavernas come alive.

Whether it’s in the old town or one of the quaint villages such as Lindos, the island’s culinary scene is at its relaxed best in November.

Greek classics like dolmades or moussaka, accompanied by a glass of local wine, provide a delightful end to a fun day in Rhodes!

Fuerteventura

In November, Fuerteventura, Spain’s second-largest Canary Island, remains a mild destination to visit.

Experience Fuerteventura’s miles of golden sand beaches at a peaceful pace.

Places like Corralejo Dunes, a unique nature reserve, or the secluded Cofete Beach, still bask in warm temperatures.

The sun might be a touch gentler than in summer months, but the water is still inviting for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts alike.

With fewer crowds, exploring the island’s charming towns becomes a much more leisurely affair!

In Betancuria, the island’s former capital, you can wander through narrow streets lined with traditional Canarian houses and visit the island’s main historical museum, all at your own pace.

The calmer atmosphere of November extends to the island’s markets too.

In towns like Costa Calma and Corralejo, you can stroll through the local markets where artisans showcase a range of local produce, crafts, and unique gifts, all without the usual throngs of shoppers.

Also, with milder temperatures and fewer people around, it’s a great time for hiking.

Fuerteventura boasts an array of scenic trails, such as those in the Jandía Natural Park, where you can truly appreciate the island’s diverse landscapes, from volcanic mountains to vast plains.

As the day concludes, treat yourself to some local cuisine in the many restaurants that remain open in November – some tourist-focused eateries close.

Enjoy a meal of fresh seafood, local cheeses, and other Canarian specialities, all the more savored for the peace and quiet of this season.

Azores

The Azores, an archipelago of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic, are thought to have “eternal spring” and are among the most unique Europe November vacations.

An unspoiled paradise, the Azores are a haven for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers.

The islands’ lush, green landscapes transform subtly in November. Their famous hydrangeas may have faded, but other endemic flora continues to add color to the terrain.

São Miguel, the largest island, boasts of Sete Cidades, a twin lake situated in the crater of a dormant volcano.

The quieter months also give you a more intimate experience of the island’s geothermal activity.

In Furnas, also on São Miguel, geothermal hot springs beckon, their mineral-rich waters offering relaxation in the cooler November weather. Don’t miss out on tasting cozido das Furnas, a local stew slow-cooked in the geothermal heat of the volcanic soil.

Over on the island of Terceira, the UNESCO-listed town of Angra do Heroísmo is also known for its colorful imperios, small chapels that reflect the Azorean tradition of the Holy Spirit cult.

November is also an ideal time for whale watching in the Azores, home to almost a third of the world’s species of cetaceans.

Athens

Athens, a cradle of Western civilization and history, dons a new facade in November.

You’ll find the mighty Acropolis standing proudly under the softer winter sun and The Parthenon, an eternal symbol of Athens.

The narrow, labyrinthine alleys of the Plaka neighborhood are less crowded, and each turn invites you to delve deeper into the city’s rich past, whether it’s in the old mansions, Byzantine-era churches, or local shops selling traditional Greek crafts.

The city’s famed museums, such as the National Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art, offer a more personal encounter with Greece’s extensive history.

Here, you’ll find precious artefacts, from the age of mythology to the height of Hellenic civilization.

As November descends, the outdoor tavernas of Monastiraki Square retain their vibrancy.

Enjoy a relaxed meal in the cooler climate, pairing Greek classics like souvlaki or moussaka with views of the illuminated Acropolis.

While the rest of Europe starts bundling up, most of Greece in winter remains pleasantly mild.

You could even take a trip to the Athenian Riviera, just to the south of the city, and enjoy the winter beaches!

Sardinia

Beach of Cala Coticcio on Caprera island, Sardinia, Italy

In the heart of the Mediterranean, Sardinia – the second-largest island in the region – is famed for its stunning coastlines and turquoise waters.

The beaches transform into peaceful, picturesque landscapes in November.

Take a stroll on the sands of La Pelosa, a jewel among the island’s numerous beautiful beaches, or soak in the stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea from the dramatic cliffs of Capo Caccia.

Away from the coastline, Sardinia’s undulating landscapes and rugged mountains open up opportunities for unhurried hikes and scenic drives.

Visit the Gennargentu National Park, where you can explore a diverse range of ecosystems, encounter indigenous wildlife, and take in panoramic views of the island.

Sardinia’s ancient history and distinctive culture are also more accessible during this time of the year.

Explore the Nuraghe of Barumini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that showcases the island’s Bronze Age civilization.

This is also a perfect time to wander around the streets of Alghero, where Catalan roots are visible in Gothic architecture, and the local dialect retains a distinct Catalan flavor.

The island’s gastronomy is another highlight that shines in November.

Savor the rich, rustic flavors of Sardinian dishes, like malloreddus (a type of gnocchi) or porceddu (roasted suckling pig), in a cozy trattoria.

Pai with local wines such as Vermentino or Cannonau!

Ibiza

Ibiza, one of Spain’s Balearic islands, is renowned worldwide as a summertime destination – with vibrant nightlife and buzzing music.

Come November, the pulse of the island transforms.

With the major summer crowds gone, Ibiza’s stunning beaches present themselves in a calmer light.

Explore the hidden coves of Cala Llentrisca or enjoy the natural beauty of Aguas Blancas at a relaxed pace.

If you relish tranquillity, the clear turquoise waters and fine sand beaches are still appealing – and it’s just about warm enough to swim!

Inland, Ibiza boasts lush landscapes with scenic walking paths around Sant Josep or cycle routes through the rustic countryside.

Along your journey, look out for traditional white-washed homes, old churches, and charming villages that dot the landscape.

Ibiza Town, the island’s capital, boasts the UNESCO-listed old town, Dalt Vila, with its historic fortress and cobbled streets.

Meander through quaint lanes lined with local shops and cafes, and take your time to explore the rich artefacts at the Archaeological Museum without the rush of summer tourists.

Then there’s the local cuisine.

From fresh seafood to traditional stews and local wines, November has a more relaxed atmosphere to enjoy these flavors.

Amalfi Coast

Historical Amalfi Old town on mediterranean Amalfi coast, Sorrento peninsula, Naples, Italy

Italy’s Amalfi Coast, with its mesmerizing coastline and picture-perfect towns, is a popular destination all year round.

But in November, it’s unhurried – and just as beautiful.

With the summer visitors absent, the iconic coastal towns such as Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi are quieter and more relaxed.

Walk up the steep, narrow streets of Positano, enjoying its colorful cliffside houses on either side.

In Ravello, stroll through the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone and savor the stunning panoramic views at your own pace.

Follow the famous ‘Path of the Gods’ hiking trail from Agerola to Positano, and marvel at the breathtaking views of the coastline and the shimmering sea.

The Duomo di Amalfi, a 9th-century cathedral with its stunning architecture and religious artefacts, stands as a testament to the region’s historical significance.

You can also visit the Paper Museum in Amalfi, which sheds light on the town’s renowned paper-making tradition.

Then there’s the food!

With the arrival of the olive harvest season in November, local restaurants offer fresh olive oil tastings.

Pair a locally produced olive oil with a traditional seafood dish, and savor the flavors of the Amalfi Coast. It’s a feast for all the senses!

Saranda, Albania

Aerial panorama of Saranda with Lekuresi Castle in South Albania

Known for its glorious beaches and historical significance, Saranda in Albania is an offbeat destination at most times of year; particularly in November, when it basks under mild sunlight.

Explore Mirror Beach and Pulebardha Beach, perhaps even taking a dip in the Ionian Sea.

I spent a week scuba diving in Saranda, although the season finishes at the start of November.

A short distance away, you’ll find the UNESCO World Heritage site of Butrint, an ancient city that showcases different periods of human occupation spanning 2000 years.

Further inland, the Blue Eye Spring, a natural phenomenon known for its stunning, vibrant blue waters, is also worth visiting (and is much quieter in November).

Albania’s most popular seaside destination, Ksamil, is also just down the road.

Saranda’s local restaurants remain open in November, serving in traditional dishes like Tavë Kosi (baked lamb with rice) and Byrek (a savory pie).

Kas, Turkey

View of the town Kas, Antalya Province, Mediterranean Coast, Turkey. High quality photo

When November descends upon Kas, a charming town on Turkey’s southwestern coast, the warmth of summer lingers, with Mediterranean-themed outdoor activities!

This is fascinating, given that you can also find snow in Turkey in November; but Kas’s southern position ensures that it holds onto warm weather for as long as possible.

The town’s pebbly beaches, such as Kaputas Beach and Big Pebble Beach, retain their inviting allure.

The clear turquoise waters may be slightly cooler than in the peak summer months, but you can still take a swim!

A short boat ride away, Kekova Island is well worth visiting.

Here lie the sunken ruins of Dolchiste, an ancient town that was destroyed by an earthquake during the 2nd century.

Back in Kas, a walk through its narrow streets and marvel at the town’s traditional architecture, its buildings awash in warm hues, contrasting beautifully with the cobalt blue of the sea and sky.

Scuba diving is still a possibility in November, too – Kas is one of the best places for diving in Turkey

Gastronomy in Kas also becomes more local in November.

Relish traditional Turkish dishes, from richly flavored kebabs to the iconic Baklava, in the town’s array of restaurants and cafes.

Marbella

November in Marbella, a luxurious Spanish city on the Costa del Sol boasts a charming old town and beautiful beaches in November.

Start your day with a stroll through the cobblestone streets of Marbella’s Old Town, or ‘Casco Antiguo’.

These narrow alleyways, lined with white-washed Andalusian houses draped in bougainvillaea, lead you to delightful squares such as Plaza de los Naranjos.

Here, beneath the fragrant orange trees, enjoy a quiet morning coffee, the square’s vibrancy subtly muted in the November calm.

The golden beaches of Marbella, though less crowded, are a delight to visit.

Playa de la Fontanilla is a peaceful spot, its pristine sand a contrast to the gentle blue waves of the Mediterranean Sea.

Though swimming might be less appealing in the cooler November sea temperatures, you can always walk along the sand and enjoy the sea!

For golf enthusiasts, Marbella continues to be a haven.

Its golf courses, including Santa Clara Golf Marbella, offer world-class facilities, and in November, you’ll find them less crowded.

Marbella boasts an array of culinary delights.

From fresh seafood dishes at the beachside ‘chiringuitos‘ to traditional tapas in the town’s many eateries, your taste buds are in for a treat!

And with the olive harvesting season underway, it’s a great time to sample some of the region’s freshest olive oil.

(I also love Marbella in December!)

Valencia

In November, Valencia holds onto its warmth like a well-guarded secret, with the Turia Gardens signalling a shift in the city’s pulse.

Experience Valencia’s ancient heart at its most tranquil with cobblestone streets rich with the city’s history dating back to Roman and Moorish times.

Marvel at the grandeur of Valencia Cathedral under the gentle November sun, its ornate architecture less swarmed by tourists during this time.

Close by, the iconic Central Market stays abuzz, the aroma of fresh produce mingling with the winter air.

The City of Arts and Sciences comes alive in a different light in November.

The architectural marvel stands as a futuristic contrast to the city’s historic core.

Its planetarium, opera house, and science museum feel less hurried; so you can explore at a much more relaxed pace.

Head to the beachfront, where the Mediterranean Sea is a sweeping expanse of calm, reflecting the mellow winter sun.

Walk along the palm-fringed promenade of Playa de la Malvarrosa and enjoy a hearty Paella at one of the seafront restaurants.

Valencia is the birthplace of this world-famous dish!

A winter trip to Valencia wouldn’t be complete without experiencing Las Fallas Museum.

Normally, you’ll have to jostle with crowds to witness its unique collection of Ninots (paper-mache figures), but in November, you’ll find the space to truly appreciate this vibrant Valencian tradition.

Vilamoura

Beautiful marina in touristic and rich Vilamoura, Quarteira, Algarve, Portugal

When November arrives in Vilamoura, a chic resort town in Portugal’s Algarve region, the summer tourists have mostly retreated.

Vilamoura’s splendid beaches, such as Praia da Marina and Praia da Falésia, are less crowded in November – but they’re still inviting.

The temperatures might not be as inviting for swimming but these sandy stretches become the perfect setting for tranquil beach walks.

Away from the beaches, Vilamoura boasts a range of outdoor activities.

Golfers can enjoy an unhurried game on one of the town’s world-class golf courses.

The Old Course, Victoria Golf Course, and Pinhal Golf Course, among others, are ever-popular in November.

If you don’t fancy golf, stroll around the marina and take in the sight of the gleaming moored yachts, which epitomise laidback luxury.

It’s a beautiful spot for a leisurely lunch, with restaurants serving a variety of local and international cuisine; from the catch of the day prepared in traditional Portuguese style to a variety of international dishes!
