Thon Hotel Tromsø Review: modern hotel in Norway!

Discover one of the best places to stay in Tromsø with this Thon Hotel Tromsø review!

If you’re looking for somewhere convenient and comfortable to stay in Tromsø city centre, I can highly recommend Thon Hotel Tromsø.

In prime location to enjoy Tromsø’s highlights – the furthest is the Arctic Cathedral, which is a mere 30-minute walk away, it boasts comfortable, warm rooms and one of the best hotel breakfast buffets I’ve ever sampled, Thon Hotel Tromsø is the perfect cosy spot to relax and recharge before heading out to enjoy the city.

We stayed in Thon Hotel when visiting Tromsø in February (to watch the reindeer racing and enjoy a variety of other winter activities!); here’s my full review.

Thon Hotel Tromsø review: the rooms

Bed at Thon hotel Tromso, with green curtains and floral wallpaper

As we used the keycard to swipe into the room, it was immediately bathed in a softly-lit glow, illuminating a workspace, comfortable bed and seating area.

As is normal in Norway, the bed had two duvets and plenty of squashy pillows. The workspace/ dresser came with a Nespresso pod coffee machine – ideal for when we wanted a warming caffeine hit either in the morning or when warming up or getting changed midway through the day.

The window looked out onto the snowy Tromsø street, with Thon Hotel Polar opposite.

A radiator underneath the window kept the room toasty, and there was also space to hang clothes, a flat-screen TV and a comfortable chair. For charging, there were normal (EU-style) and USB outlets and fast WiFi reached every room.

The en-suite bathroom had a powerful shower with toiletries, a large sink and a toilet.

On our first night in Tromsø, we headed out for a northern lights experience, arriving back at the hotel at 2:00 am. We sunk into the cloud-like bed and enjoyed a long, uninterrupted sleep.

The service of Thon Hotel Tromsø

Service came with a smile at Thon Hotel Tromsø; although we didn’t have much of a need for any assistance (as there were no issues with the room!), the reception staff were always friendly and helpful.

Our room was immaculately cleaned, providing a haven to step into on our quick breaks from the city!

Thon Hotel Tromsø breakfast

Once we arose, we headed downstairs to breakfast, a fantastic affair with smoothies, yoghurt pots, lots of fresh fruit, cooked food, crusty bread and a variety of cheeses and pastries (to name a few items!).

There was something for every breakfast style here; whether you can’t function without a slap-up fry-up in the morning or if you prefer something light, you’ll adore the morning offerings at Thon Hotel Tromsø!

The hotel’s facilities

The reception was spacious and contemporary, with a coffee machine offering free hot beverages (perfect if you’re waiting for airport pick up after check out or before check-in) and a range of comfortable seating.

When staying at Thon Hotel Tromsø, you can use the fitness suite at Thon Hotel Polar, their opposite residence. As we were on such a tight schedule, I didn’t get a chance to try out the gym, but it’s valuable knowledge for any gym goers!

The location

Thon Hotel Tromsø is in a prime location to enjoy the city’s highlights.

Sitting parallel to the main street, Storgata, it’s within walking distance to the Troll Museum, Polar Museum, Polaria and the harbour, where northern lights and Sami ranch tours leave from.

Attractions that are a little further are the Arctic Cathedral, Tromsø Museum and the Alpine Arctic Botanical Gardens; you might want to take a taxi or bus to reach these from Thon Hotel Polar, but it would be the same if you’re staying at any central hotel in Tromsø.

While Thon Hotel Tromsø didn’t have quite the same charm as other hotels we stayed at in Norway (such as Fretheim Hotel or Fjaerland Fjordstove Hotel), it was a contemporary, comfortable space in the centre of Tromso where we could completely relax before heading out on our next adventure.

There’s so much to see in and around Tromsø (especially in winter) that you won’t be spending much time at all in your hotel room, and Thon Hotel Tromsø offers the ideal retreat to recharge every evening!
